HOURS OF OPERATION: 24 hours/day, seven days/week

FUNCTIONS:

  1. To provide level one Obstetrical care for the benefit of mothers and neonates with no significant identifiable risks. Appropriate resources are available to provide care for emergencies which cannot be anticipated including maternal and neonatal stabilization or resuscitation prior to transfer.
  2. To promote the concept of family-centered maternity care by promoting rooming in , breast feeding, sibling access, partner labour support, and promoting a labour and delivery free from unnecessary interventions.
  3. To provide preoperative and post operative care for adult surgical patients.
  4. To provide nursing care to all types of adult medical patients or palliative care patients.
  5. To provide nursing care to all types of pediatric patients requiring medical or surgical care.
  6. To provide a learning opportunity for nursing and medical students to enable them to meet the objectives set in their curriculum.

SERVICES PROVIDED:

The Active care unit consists of Thirty (30) beds, two labour rooms as well as a level one nursery. Nursing care is provided by Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses. All nursing staff are cross trained to provide care to all the client groups that may be present. Each physician is responsible for his/her own clients who may be admitted to the unit.
